Healthy Adolescent Transitions This innovative program designed to prevent rapid repeat pregnancy among adolescents is based on behavioral economics (BE), an interdisciplinary model that suggests specific environmental modifications to improve individual decision making. The program uses BE to promote goals for adolescent mothers in the areas of long-acting reversible contraception to prevent repeat pregnancy, financial literacy, educational/career attainment, and healthy life skills, including HPV vaccination, finding a medical home, nicotine cessation, and nutrition. Teen Options to Prevent Pregnancy (TOPP) The TOPP program aims to prevent rapid repeat pregnancy and promote healthy birth spacing among teens by providing telephone and home based care coordination and access to family planning and other services. It uses Motivational Interviewing (MI) to guide teens in choosing birth control, with an emphasis on long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods. What the Research Shows The randomized control trial showed that TOPP participants: • Had fewer unintended repeat pregnancies and births • Were more likely to use birth control and to choose LARC methods • Were less likely to have unprotected sex Plan A This 23-minute, entertainment-education video was developed to reduce unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among African-American and Latina young women ages 18 to 19. Relatable characters deliver information and model behaviors regarding pregnancy and HIV/STI risk-reduction strategies, including risk perception; contraceptive options, including dual contraception and emergency contraception; condom use and negotiation skills; the importance of testing; and how to discuss these important topics with a health care provider. What the Research Shows In a 5-year randomized controlled trial with over 1,700 young women, Plan A viewers had significant, sustained improvements in risk perception, contraceptive knowledge, patient-provider communication, HIV/STI testing, and safer sex practices. Three additional studies found that Plan A is highly engaging and acceptable to young women as well as organizational staff. Coming soon!
